Introductions

Well, it seems that I have been bitten by the "blog bug", as I have decided to create one of my own. I'm still trying to work out the kinks behind design/layout of it, so it's going to be a little messy for the time being until I can spend a couple of hours playing around with it. Unfortunately, time seems to be more valuable than gold for me at the moment (contrary to the fact that I am writing a blog post right now, we'll get to that later....).

So I guess every blog has a purpose/point behind it. Though, to me, that defeats the purpose of a blog, because I feel that a blog is just an open domain in which people can write aimlessly for hours on end about this and that. So, I will try and do my best to keep my blog as close to my topic as possible: My Life.

I am a Junior at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. I am working towards my BS in Kinesiology, with the goal of applying to, and getting into Medical School. I would really like to specialize in surgery. Everybody asks what type of surgery, and I always tell them you won't know until you get your hands "wet". Which is completely true. I could be in love with neurosurgery now but find that I have a knack for orthopedics. That being said, I would love to be a heart surgeon. I think the heart is the coolest fricken thing in the world. Barring any serious complications, it beats non-stop for 80+ years! How many car engines can do that? Also, I with stem cells being the key to medicine in the future, I think that one day, we will be able to create major organs using a patients own stem cells. Personally, I wouldn't mind being the person to build the first human heart out of stem cells. It's kind of my dream/life goal.

I guess that's all I can think of at the moment, I'm sure I'll share more as I post more blogs. So I guess we shall get this show on the road. Let's begin with this past week, as I will try and post a new blog every Sunday from here on out. We finally received a snowstorm in New England this winter! We were supposed to get about 11 inches up here in Amherst, but the weatherman were wrong (shocker) and we only got about 5 inches. Regardless, UMASS still chose not to cancel evening classes or just give us the whole day off. Bastards. They wouldn't cancel school if the entire campus were on fire. Now, normally I hate snow. Well, not snow specifically, because I think it is actually quite pretty when out in nature. The reason I hate snow is because with it comes the cold. I hate the cold more than anything else. I would literally take the hottest, most humid day in the history of planet Earth every single day over having it below 60 degrees. And I will train in it. And I will love every second of it. And I will win at everything because no one else is crazy enough to train in it.

I guess that brings me into my next topic: my training. I am a runner. I have always been a pretty good athlete, but it wasn't until highschool that I began to run competitively. As soon as that first gun went off, I was in love with the sport. Since then, I have had many highs and far too many lows than I care to think about. Injuries have plagued me since my sophomore year of highschool, and I have been fighting them since. It is because of these injuries that I am now a triathlete though. Cross-training was all I could do, and, eventually I decided to try out the sport that I was essentially doing to stay in shape for my primary sport. I did my first sprint triathlon 2 summers ago. I won my age group, got 11th overall, and set the fastest time in the run. I loved it! I continued to ride a lot that summer. Eventually I burnt out mentally and started lifting a lot for a change in pace. I packed on about 15lbs of muscle before I got bored with it so I started to train again. Cycling became a refresher again, so it was nice to do something that I loved again. By this time, I started mixing in some running again (oh yeah, I had suffered from pattellar tendonitis senior year = no running in college....big bummer). Eventually, I switched completely to running. It was incredible! I was in better shape than I ever was in highschool, and I was hoping to make a run at walking on to the XC/track team at school. Then injury struck again. I picked up plantar fasciitis in my left foot. That was back in August.....

That is the VERY truncated version, as I am short on time and what to get it all written down and get back to studying. So quick summary:
-Junior at UMASS
-Kin major
-Want to be a heart surgeon
-Swim, bike, run
-Used to primarily run
-Ran
-got hurt
-ran again
-got hurt again
-repeat previous 4 about five more times....
-Now I'm back to running again. Yay!

So, I am slowly working my way back up into consistent running again. Can't decide if I want to wake up super early and run before class tomorrow or just run later in the day. Tomorrow is very busy for me though, so I won't decide until.....well, tomorrow morning.

That is all I have time for today, as I have 4 exams this week, and need to get back to studying. Perhaps I can fill in any gaps I have created next time. We shall see. Wish me luck during this hell week!

Hasta Luego!
